Skoll by LhuneArt Skoll by LhuneArt
This is a short version of the background for a game concept (designed for smartphones) called "Sköll". It's based on the Norse Mythology of Sköll and his brother Hati, the wolves who chased the Sun and the Moon to make sure they would continue to travel across the sky.

The gameplay is quite simple; the player controlls Sköll starting at the bottom, and has to leap towards the sun to eat it. The challenge here is that whenever he leaps off of a branch or platform, it snaps under it's weight, so it can never use the same branch twice. If the player waits too long, the branch will also snap; Sköll will fall back down and the game will be over. Along the way towards the top there will be collectables, bonuses and things to avoid.

There are many ways to make the game more interesting (think of different levels, multiplayer versions with Hati and the moon, different bonuses as the player gets better etc), and we're hoping that we will be allowed to continue to work on it (we'll have to wait for several weeks to hear the results of our presentation).

My concept sketch of Sköll himself: [link] .

Nifty style! I love the wavy-weaved style.

Game sound good too; everyone likes mythology and wolves.

I work in the mobile app industry, and I'd say it looks like a decent idea for a game.

The only thing that would concern me is game replay/challenge value. It looks like a very short board and the game could be played rather quickly. To balance that out, you may opt to make it very hard, thus not appealing.

An idea is you could have the different sections designed to tile (roots, middle, beaches, so one feels like the game is fast paced with constant leaping, think of a vertical Robot Unicorn Attack). It's really ideal if someone can get in there, bounce around with Skoll for maybe 3-5 mins, and either fail, or reach the sun.

You however may have a different approach entirely that could be successful, maybe a more strategy based "you have to jump exactly this way or you will fail approach" with each round getting more challenging (and lots of suns being eaten).

The key is to have a game that is simple to play for everyone, but difficult to master, as that will keep them coming back to improve.

Reminds me of the simplicity of Ivy the Kiwi, but mean to play sometimes.

Hey thanks a lot for that :). Yeah I was thinking maybe there'd be different levels; for example you start with the tree where you get (say) 3 levels that are gradually more difficult, then you switch to a mountain, then a jungle or what have you; there are many possible variations to think of. Having said that I'm not a game designer or developer and I'd need someone else's help in thinking of mechanics and then actually programming them.

The robot unicorn attack idea is actually pretty cool as well, though I didn't envision this game as constantly moving on it's own; the player would have to keep jumping themselves (and kind of being forced to do so since the branches will break if they wait too long and falling back down = game over).

Yeah as long as you have an exciting, or strategic means that is enjoyable in some manner. People also really like familiarity, and simple controls are a must.

Maybe the branches are even swaying back and forth so the player has the extra tension of having to the time the jump right before the branch breaks. I know a lot of old school video games had that kind of "time your jump right or die falling" gameplay.

Many of the most success apps just rehash an old idea with shiny new graphics (Ie, Angry Birds is Crush the Castle) It may seem of counter productive and unoriginal to rehash an idea, but some of the best apps do it.

Haha I'm glad! If I can find the time I'm going to look for a programmer to possibly realize this with me :).
